King of Remixes

When I first heard the latest Radiohead release, King of Limbs, I was struck by the 'remix friendly' nature of the tracks.  This was a record whose very structure and instrumentation could be wholly dissected and creatively rearranged to entirely different ends. The fan envisaged The King of Limbs Part 2, perhaps? I think this might just be so much more; this series will feature a host of the best remix producers on the planet.

The band has announced today that next month they will start rolling out a series of limited-edition twelve-inches featuring remixes from their last full length.  (Or perhaps more accurately three quarter length, it was a little short by all standards). The first release will feature remixes of "Little By Little" by Caribou and "Lotus Flower" by Jacques Greene, and will be available on July 4
th .  (July 5th in North America.)

XL and Ticker Tape will handle the releases, which will be available in select independent record stores and through the band's website.  CD and digital enthusiasts should note the sites will also have the files in WAV format.
Additional information will be provided when it becomes available.  Let’s hope the band makes some high quality vines (limbs?) available to fans to work their creative remixing magic too.

The King of Limbs – Live From the Basement

BBC Worldwide Music Television has signed a deal with Radiohead to distribute internationally a new and exclusive live performance of Radiohead’s eighth album.

The King of Limbs album was released digitally in February 2011 and physically at the end of March 2011, yet this special performance will be the first time the band will have played this song cycle in public. The band will be performing for the much lauded music show ‘From the Basement’, the brain child of Radiohead production guru Nigel Godrich. (Previously the band performed selections from In Rainbows on the same show in 2008).

Radiohead – The King of Limbs: Live From The Basement is a 55-minute performance from one of the most successful and critically acclaimed acts of their generation, who have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. The program will feature the notoriously elusive band performing the entirety of their celebrated new album in a studio setting with some additional behind the scenes material. It is scheduled to be the first time that the Grammy Award winners are captured on camera this year.

From the BBC:
Bryce Edge of Courtyard Management, Radiohead’s management company said, "This will be Radiohead's first collaboration with BBC Worldwide and the band are excited at the prospect of having their first live performance of 'The King of Limbs' broadcast around the world . The band will be filmed and recorded by the From The Basement team, which includes Nigel Godrich their long time producer, Dilly Gent ,who commissioned many of the memorable Radiohead videos and Grant Gee who filmed the Radiohead documentary 'Meeting People is Easy'"
The broadcast will air on July 1st.

``All I know is what I read in the papers”

With the surprise appearance of Radiohead‘s eighth LP The King of Limbs released last month, fans across around the world have downloaded, listened to, blogged about, critiqued, remixed and shared said release... But for those audiophiles and Radiohead completists who prefer a physical copy, tomorrow (March 29th) is the day tbd records releases the album on CD and LP in North America.

Accompanying the physical release of The King of Limbs is a free newspaper entitled The Universal Sigh, which will be handed out on Tuesday at select record stores while supplies last. The curious can check out a .pdf version of the newspaper now available via New Zealand music website Ripitup.co.nz. The newspaper consists of short stories and pictures centered around the forest, with artist and longtime Radiohead collaborator Stanley Donwood among the contributors.

News today as well that Radiohead are set to release two new songs on limited-edition vinyl next month. The band will release 'Supercollider' and 'The Butcher' on a seven-inch vinyl single on Record Store Day, April 16th, reports fansite Ateaseweb.com.

The two songs are previously-unreleased, although the former has been played by the band live before. Get this one if you can as there are only going to be 2,000 copies of the single pressed.

This Generation’s Asia - (Without the Suck Part)

Hmmm, what’s it been now? Nearly a fortnight since I’ve reported the goings on of the most important band in the universe. This time out though I’ll be focusing on their diffident and prolific frontman… No it’s not the fifth coming of Van Halen but something so much better.

Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has recruited Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Beck and onetime R.E.M. drummer Joey Waronker and percussionist Mauro Refosco for a new live group that will make its debut this Sunday and Monday, October 4th and 5th, at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre. The singer announced the unlikely union on Radiohead’s Dead Air Space website yesterday. The news ends weeks of speculation surrounding the usually reserved Radiohead frontman, who has been seen in Los Angeles recently, DJing at the Roosevelt Hotel and being summarily “papped”.

“In the past couple of weeks I’ve been getting a band together for fun to play The Eraser stuff live and the new songs etc. to see if it could work,” Yorke writes. “We don’t really have a name and the set will not be very long cuz… well… we haven’t got that much material yet! But come and check it out if you are in the area.”
Yorke has reportedly long expressed a desire to bring the textural Eraser to the stage, but so far his solo performances have amounted to him sitting alone onstage with an acoustic guitar and piano. That should change with this new, nameless band. (Your suggestions of course are always welcome in the comments section.) I’d like to offer Headless Chickenfoot as a nod to Thom's band name past yet tying in his Red Hot Chili brethren. Of course the circle would have been complete with Diamond David Lee Roth in the mix; alas a guy can dream.

It’s been a hectic month for Thom who has released unleashed a pair of new Radiohead tracks (“Harry Patch (In Memory Of)”, “These Are My Twisted Words”), his own 12” single last week. Lastly, Yorke’s song entitled “Hearing Damage” will be featured on the New Moon soundtrack in short order.

The Hardest Working Man in Show Business

Thom Yorke to Release "The Hollow Earth" Next Month

Radiohead frontman and red pants wearer Thom Yorke recently hinted that the band is not currently planning to release another album conventionally.

He went on to elaborate that he still had a lot of time for the album as an “artform”, but explained that to release another batch of songs in that format would "kill" Radiohead.

"None of us want to go into that creative hoo-ha of a long-play record again. Not straight off," he told The Believer magazine.

"I mean, it's just become a real drag. It worked with [2007 album] 'In Rainbows' because we had a real fixed idea about where we were going. But we've all said that we can't possibly dive into that again. It'll kill us."
Yorke added that Radiohead "need to get away" from releasing albums in the traditional format. (Observant readers will note two brand new Radiohead songs have recently surfaced and prove Thom to be a man of his word.)

And now information about another actual physical release, a solo, next month has been uncovered. Exclaim Magazine’s Brock Thiessen made contact with a source at beloved Sonic Unyon distributors who confirmed a limited 12-inch of two new Thom Yorke songs, “Apart By Horses” and “The Hollow Earth,” to be released on September 22nd. The release, by ATO’s TBD Records, is limited to only 4,000 copies in North America, 4,000 in Europe, and 300 in Canada. That in mind, you may want to get pre-order in now.

Presently, insider speculatation is that one or both of these new Yorke songs are his contribution to the forthcoming New Moon soundtrack.

Great news indeed from an artist who continues to break new ground with every step he takes.

Radiohead to Perform at the 2009 Grammy Awards

At Least Part of It Will Be Worth Watching This Year

News today that Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Justin Timberlake, T.I., Kanye West and Jay-Z will all perform at this year’s Grammy Awards ceremony. A diverse line-up but the biggest coup has to be the addition of Radiohead, who have never played the event despite Best Alternative Album wins for OK Computer and Kid A. The band is nominated for a stellar five awards this year, including Best Album for In Rainbows. The presentation will be the band’s “first live U.S. television performance since 2000.”

McCartney’s Grammy performance is a bit of a surprise as well, considering the former Wings frontman and some other band was only nominated in a pair of smaller categories. Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl will join Paulie onstage as his “special guest drummer.” Go Gringo!

This star-studded slate of newly announced artists join an already stacked roster of performers at the 51st annual Grammy awards, including Coldplay, Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney. Unconfirmed outlets have reported Radiohead’s Thom Yorke will join Katie Perry on stage for a very special version of "I Kissed a Weird Fishie".

I just can’t wait.

Straight Outta Oxford

First week of 2009 and a viral little download has emerged for your listening pleasure. I honestly don't think this will last long and well, Amplive kinda did this all ready last year but it is still worth your time.

Get it while you can. Here.

Sooo Kid A… You Wanna Be In Rainbows?

UPDATE: No luck on being able to widgetize and download your edit. It is still an interesting exercise mind you. I'll keep working on it.

And for the record, I think it was this guy that had the idea first.

Well kind of.

I have to admit, I’ve been a little starved for Radiohead content of late. Probably because they were virtual fixtures in my posts this time last year. I happened upon this tonight and I think it’s well worth a few moments of your time. Japanese TV station WOWOW has a feature on their site that lets you mix a video of a live Radiohead performance wowow.co.jp from the Saitama Super Stadium leg of their 2008 Japanese tour. A set of quite aesthetic data visualizations accompanies this online music video mix tool.

The video interface allows you to choose from 12 colour-coded cameras to record your own "rainbow" (the song 15 Step is the opening track from Radiohead's In Rainbows album). You can then play back your edit by clicking and dragging the playhead in the timeline, or view charts of the most popular shots (click on the two buttons on the right side. There's some impressive juggling going on behind the scenes to keep the video playing as you hop from camera to camera. So this is your turn to be the director. Play around a little, it’s kind of fun. I couldn't figure out if there was a way to watch other people's edits or to share your edit, so if you figure it out let me know.

Posted on Radiohead's Dead Air Space site earlier today.

Thu, 28 August
Santa Barbara

Hello! To celebrate the end of a brilliant tour, we're going to webcast the last show here in America. We'll be playing live in Santa Barbara, at the Bowl. It's one of our favourite places to play; I think we've ended tours there before, once even playing a cover of ' cinnamon girl '. It's not too big, in fact it's very intimate, a small arena with a dirt floor, set in pretty countryside. It should be a special night, for lots of reasons, and we're going to try and share as much of it as we can on the webcast. Nigel, our producer, will be helping out getting it to you, so if it goes wrong....

It's live! Thank you so much to everyone who's come and seen us this year; it has truly been the most special and exciting tour for all of us.

Webcast details to follow...
x

Webkinz for Adults? - Radiohead Launch Social Networking Site

Two days ago Radiohead, quite surreptitiously, launched its own social-networking site, W.A.S.T.E. Central. A move that marked yet another developmental foray into music promotion in this, our 'Digital age 2.0.'

So, just like
Facebook, MySpace and that kid-friendly Webkinz, W.A.S.T.E. - Central comes packed with all the usual features: a main site area, your own private space, blog and message board options, and the ability to upload content like songs, photos, videos and various ephemera. The site also contains an up-to-date tour listings area. And above all, you can add - or delete - all your other ‘Radiamigos’. And that is where the social-networking aspect happens. Fanclub 2.0 if you will for all you old “Ten Clubbers” out there. No word either as to the availability of fuzzy, loveable and furry versions of your favourite ‘Radiohead’ to further the levels of interactivity. While so far it appears even Thom, Johnny and Colin, all have site profiles,
they haven’t addressed their burgeoning community. W.A.S.T.E.
administrators have posted this welcome message:
“Thanks very much for joining up! It'd be very quiet in here indeed otherwise. For those who are interested and want to stick around, we'll be adding plenty more bits and pieces in the coming weeks and ironing out any wrinkles or annoyances the best we can. Hope you find something interesting to play with.”
So the year of Radiohead continues, I'm curious to see just how far this goes. I am sure NINkinz won't be too far behind...
