Meaford Becomes Eclectic

With music festival season approaching quickly I thought it only appropriate to kick things off with one of the more esoteric summer offerings. Even better, this one is practically in our own backyard.

Electric Eclectics, one of the most offbeat music festivals in Canada, has released the line-up of its fifth annual event, which will take place in Meaford, ON from July 30th to August 1st.

Oh! How Lucky We Are

Earlier this year, hometown favourites (and all round nice guys) A Horse and his Boy captured CHRW's 2009 Local Album of the Year. (Their excellent, self-titled release entirely worthy of this accolade.) Come out tomorrow night to celebrate this with A Horse and his Boy and top ten nominees Bryan Pole and Light of East Ensemble. This show will be a wonderful mix for a great evening of music and entertainment. In between sets, witness the MAGICAL MYSTERY of Mr. Eman as he wows the crowd with his magic talents.

The Acorn Returning with No Ghost

The Acorn’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s wildly successful Glory Hope Mountain is finally set for release in Canada on Paper Bag Records. After spending two long years on the road, Rolf Klausener and Ottawa’s finest began work on the album in the summer of 2009. The product of these efforts No Ghost will be released on June 1st. (Singles and tour dates supporting the release will be announced soon.)

Since the release of the much beloved Glory Hope Mountain, the indie (Kanye Approved) songsters have toured Europe and North America extensively and slowly built up critical acclaim for both their live show and their recorded output. You may recall the band were included in the 2008 Polaris Music Prize longlist. (Frankly, I think they should have won the award that year.) Recently though Glory Hope Mountain was included on the prestigious longlist for the Uncut Music Award which rewards the “most inspiring and rewarding musical experience” of the past year. The Acorn's Glory Hope Mountain was the only Canadian band of the 25 artists on the list which also includes albums by Bob Dylan, Dirty Projectors, Wilco, Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear. As well, in the past couple of years, talented popsters have embarked on a number of high-profile support tours for music luminaries like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Calexico, and Elbow.

In the summer of 2009 the band secluded themselves at a cottage in Northern Quebec to begin work on the follow up to Glory Hope Mountain with No Ghost being the end result. This one promises to be very different too. Free from the personal and sometimes intricate themes of Glory Hope Mountain’s extraordinary emotional material, No Ghost features the levity and spontaneity reminiscent of The Acorn’s infamous live shows, all the while showcasing Rolf Klausener’s unique songcraft. Definitely one to watch for dear reader. Maybe, just maybe the 2010 Polaris Prize will be rightfully claimed after all.

The New Pornographers Announce Tour

Earlier this year I wrote about the forthcoming fifth album from Canadian uber pop combo, the New Pornographers. With the album's May 4th release date on the horizon and the track “Your Hands (Together)” now available, the ante has been upped as an upcoming tour has just been announced. High Violet in May

Some splendid new music news from the camp of Brooklyn’s finest earlier this week. The National’s Boxer follow-up, officially titled High Violet, comes out May 10th in the UK and May 11th everywhere else via 4AD. The cover, is based on a Mark Fox sculpture called "The Binding Force".

If you were fortunate to get tickets you will probably catch some of these new songs on their spring tour.

"I repeat: It's half-assed"

Lofty funnyman Conan O'Brien is bringing a "half-assed" live show to thirty cities around the continent, the funnyman announced Thursday, ending weeks of anticipation from fans still fuming from his premature Tonight Show departure. Team Coco can assuredly rejoice as the big-haired comedian is planning a North American tour described as "a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence" on its official site. (Three Canadian dates are listed.)

O'Brien went directly to Twitter to break the news of the aptly-dubbed 'Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour':

"Hey Internet: I'm headed to your town on a half-assed comedy and music tour," he writes, adding, "I repeat: It's half-assed."

Eager (Conanites, Conanians, Conanicans?) can visit TeamCoco.com to view tour dates, (listed below) which begin April 12th in Eugene, OR, and conclude June 14th in Atlanta. The tour is presented by American Express.

There are no more details on what will actually be included in the live show, except the show will reportedly feature sidekick Andy Richter and members of the "Tonight Show" band.

Rumors of a live show first began after Conan was booted from the 'Tonight Show' in January in favor of its previous host, Jay Leno. The funnyman left the network with a multi-million dollar settlement that reportedly keeps him off TV airwaves until September.

Charlotte (Some Times)

Last year, French actress/chanteuse/rock n’ roll girlfriend #68- Charlotte Gainsbourg released IRM; a stunning record co-written and produced by Beck Hansen. An inspired and fruitful pairing this record remains high atop the list of my most played discs this year. The announcement yesterday that she will be hitting the roads of North America for the first time ever is an exciting one. If you’re lucky enough to see her you’re in for a very special evening.

The outing will include a stop at Coachella, as well as four Canadian dates: Vancouver and Victoria, plus a two-night stand in Montreal. Pretty safe to assume she can expect some reverential treatment for the Quebec gigs.

Neil Young Trunk Show

The Silence of the Lambs/Stop Making Sense director Jonathan Demme is an old hand at filming Neil Young, filming live shows, and filming Neil Young live shows. Demme previously directed Young's 2006 concert film Heart of Gold, as well as the non-Neil concert docs Storefront Hitchcock (Robyn Hitchcock) and the aforementioned Talking Heads masterpiece. You might remember too it was Demme who managed to get TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe to sing Young's "Unknown Legend" in Rachel Getting Married. You know the film you kinda liked with Anne Hathaway? The man is clearly a fan of Shakey and this comes as welcome Neil News.

On March 19th, Young's movie Neil Young Trunk Show will open at a few theaters across the US, where it will run for a week only. Reprise will release it on DVD and Blu-ray to the wider populous sometime later in the year. Demme filmed Young playing two shows at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania when he was on his 2007 Chrome Dreams II tour. In the movie, he plays both electric and acoustic songs, and the set list includes "Mexico", "Kansas", "The Sultan", "Cinnamon Girl", "Cowgirl in the Sand", "After the Gold Rush", "The Believer". The special set also features an extended 20-minute version of "No Hidden Path".

No word if Demme tracked down David Byrne’s big suit for the Young film. (I think k d lang may still have it from her appearance at the Opening Ceremonies of the Vancouver Winter Olympics. ed)

Kim Gordon Performing/Guzzling

I’ve written before about the first time seeing Sonic Youth in concert. So many years ago now and yet the image of their iconic bass player is still seered into my memory. Long blonde hair, an uncompromising voice and possessed of a very certain New York flair. I fell in love with Kim Gordon that night and the music of Sonic Youth would change me.

News today that said object of my rock n’ roll goddess affections is about to publish a limited edition art book. Entitled Performing/Guzzling the book will be available from Rizzoli press this month. Kim Gordon: Performing/Guzzling is the first in a series of books by Rizzoli and Nieves that consists of beautifully designed books by artists, photographers, and designers who have substantially contributed to the texture of artistic culture.

Fans beware: The darkness of the auditorium hasn’t protected you from the critical eye of Kim Gordon. Gordon, the vocalist, bassist, and guitarist for the indie rock band Sonic Youth, who also has a solid reputation as a visual artist, has been watching those watching her. What she sees when looking at her audience while performing is the basis for her hardcover multimedia artist’s book, Performing/Guzzling. The volume presents a portfolio of her painting and photos offering visions of her experience onstage, punctuated by her writing and lyrics, as well as by short essays by the artist, musician, and critic Jutta Koether and the New Yorker staff writer Hilton Als. The first 3,000 copies even include a signed print by Gordon.

Bub’s v Bieb’s – Juno Nominees Announced

I have to admit, I was getting a little anxious to see the nominations for this years edition of the Juno Awards. After all, there has been a plethora of great, new Canadian music releases in the last twelve months that might just make the cut. Basia Bulat, Dan Mangan, Sunset Rubdown, the Wooden Sky… The list is a huge one, each infinitely worthy of recognition and award. Sadly I was mistaken. Not quite your Mom’s Junos but if she likes Michael Buble she will be one happy lady. Not so much if she happens to like Lightnng Dust.

This year, the awards, which will be handed out in St. John's, Nfld., in April will likely see Monsieur Buble see a fair amount of stage time. He did after all pick up more nominations than anyone else with six nods. Billy Talent, Drake and country singer Johnny Reid follow closely behind the Canadian crooner, with four nominations apiece. Drake and Billy Talent will also perform at the Junos.

Classified and K'Naan both picked up three nominations, as did 16-year-old Festival City pop sensation Justin Bieber. Metric and Blue Rodeo, who were also nominated, will do some of their numbers live during the Junos.

Alas, saving, yet brief rays of hope emerged as Julie Doiron, Handsome Furs, Amy Millan, Cuff the Duke, Carolyn Mark and NQ Arbuckle, Joel Plaskett, Bahamas, Great Lake Swimmers and The Hylozoists are among some of the other nominees that may draw me in for a casual look come awards night.

As was previously announced, April Wine are this year's Canadian Music Hall Of Fame inductees, while Bryan Adams will receive the Allan Waters Humanitarian Award and former Universal Music Canada chairman Ross Reynolds will be honoured with the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award. The Junos will be televised live from St. John's on April 18th.

Touch the Dark Side on Record Store Day

Record Store Day (aka Christmastime for record geeks and geekettes) is just around the corner and a surfeit of interesting releases await our excited gasps. One of those treasures belongs to the Flaming Lips. Longtime fans of everything Christmas it’s not a surprise they will be actively participating this year. Yesterday the band announced the physical release of “THE FLAMING LIPS, ALONG WITH STARDEATH AND WHITE DWARFS WITH HENRY ROLLINS AND PEACHES DOING ‘THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON’” will be available for sale on limited edition vinyl beginning April 17th 2010, (Record Store Day). Collectors of shiny digital versions will have to wait as the CD manifestation will go on sale on May 4th.
