Clear Eyed and True – A Special Blog Post Part Two

Discussions on the Record - Call by the Lightning Bug Situation

Once in a while a record comes along that resonates with me on every basic level. Emotionally, spiritually and even physically. The music, the lyrics and even the artwork exploring very human themes in turn revealing certain universal truths . Radiohead's Kid A did that for me, as did Tim by the Replacements. Both are very different records but they became a part of me because I can relate to them on a deeply personal level. Over time they become a part of me in a sense because they help to explain me. Not an easy task at the best of times. Albums like this are rare gems and I hold them in very high esteem. Another record that has done that to me is the new release by the Lightning Bug Situation entitled Call.

Rather than doing a typical record review I have opted to discuss the record with my dear friend and fellow blogger Barbara (the Bad Tempered Zombie). The discussion, a series of questions from each other on our thoughts and observations on this very special album.  You can see her fab observations here.  Mine are included below.  (A HUGE thank you to her for playing along).

Tell me about the first time you listened to this album.

I first listened to Call on a very early morning drive. The combination of brisk temperature and colourful display of autumn leaves somehow seemed the perfect incidental visual accompaniment to the music on the disc. At first jarring, deliberate and mechanical the music evenly morphed to this very warm incandescent atmosphere as it progressed. It has a very cinematic quality. I remember the record made me feel as if I was watching an old home movie shot on Super 8 film- All faded colours, vaguely identifiable faces and uncomfortable smiles from the past flickering by me. It sets up some powerful imagery; couple that Brian Miller's lyrics and I really felt drawn into his world. The effect is compounded as his songs always seem to remind me of my own past. For that reason Call at once brought me a certain amount of sadness but also brought me great joy. I guess thats why I immediately replayed the disc as soon as it ended.

To take your question a step further though, the first time I really truly listened to this record was two nights after this as I took an evening walk around my neighbourhood. It was here I was better able to focus on and discern Miller's profound lyricism. That night was a different listening experience than the previous one because of those lyrics. At one moment putting a smile on my face, next questioning my skills as a Dad and quite nearly bringing me to tears. His small stories so very affecting and reassuring because ultimately you see one's own universe in them. That is their power and testimony to his talent. We know sadness and heartbreak but we also know beauty and truth (to turn Miller's phrase) will “heal our insides” and everything will be all right. The fact that the record ends with a sound fragment of Brian laughing felt very reassuring to me.

What colour are these songs?

This is a very interesting question. I say so because of the fact that I perceived four very distinct colours as I listened to this record right from the start. (My apologies if any synesthesia is showing.) The first colour, a robin's egg blue, then light brown, tan perhaps and lastly dark, dark blue, not quite black. (Understand that this is only a perceptual assessment of mine.) The colours are very distinct though and seem to get bolder and more pronounced as I continue to experience and grow with this album. To give you perspective on those colours the robin's egg blue, imagine a faded blue sky from an old photograph or postcard. The light brown, the colour of decaying leaves or earth in the fall. The dark blue almost blood like. All of these colours so very organic, representing, I think the cycle of life. This in turn, mirroring the very organic instrumentation and song styles of the album.

What makes this album so powerful?

I touched on this earlier but I think its the flashes of recognition in Miller's lyrics that allows the listener to become a part of the story he is trying to tell. His condition reminds us of our own and it is that sense of relativity that endears the record to me completely. Themes of doubt, love, fear, wonderment, joy and even death are head turning themes. As a listener then, it makes for a very powerful listening experience. I swear I did a full-on double take when Miller uttered this line in “Groundhog”
“I swear I've been thinking the same thought since I was one.”
To explain. I have very strong recollections of my youth. A series of disjointed images at best , but all very clear. Now, I may be stretching the meaning of the line but for me that youthful soul is still very much a part of me today. Wiser but intrinsically the same. That mindset never truly goes away. A good thing too.

I think so many records I listen to work as a form of escape but my favourite ones are the ones I go to for comfort. To remind me of the good things and the bad and that we are not alone. Call is exactly that for me and very, very powerful.

The lyrics are intensely personal, but simultaneously universal. Which lyrics struck particularly close to home?

Another great question. I suspect I could name a favourite line in every song on the album. Avoiding the obvious though, I would say the line in “For Nancy, With a Bruised Heart” absolutely slays me every single time though.
“I hope this song comes on and heals your insides.”
A sentiment so hopeful, earnest and heartbreakingly beautiful that hearing it just makes my eyes sparkle. (You know what that is code for.) Miller may have been comforting his wife Nancy with this one but for me it describes in one simple sentence the single intention of every mixtape or CD I have ever shared with anyone. To use your phrase, that one hit VERY close to home.

The other line from “Pull” the opening track on the album.

“I'm stuck under a pillow, a pillow made of stone. ”
I guess it reminds me of how we can easily take the simplest of things or concerns and eventually let them burden us completely. Perhaps its telling us we should be tossing the simple concerns aside and deal with the bigger issues. The important one. That one too kinda hit close to home.

You’re being sent on a one-man mission to Mars and you can take only one track with you. Which one?

That's really tough, but for those one-man missions to Mars I would have to say “Fall”. A song about my absolute favourite season. The song is also very representative of everything I love about the Lightning Bug Situation. From the simple, clock like instrumentation to those haunting, yet stoic and reassuring lyrics.

“I wanna be a good Dad, clear-eyed and true."
I'm pretty sure with a line like that it might just give me the necessary encouragement I need to stay on track and focus on my Martian mission

Describe Brian Miller’s voice. Does he remind you of anyone?

Hmmmmm, that one is tough. His voice so clear, with a troubled fragility that belies a weary yet wise storyteller. The perfect complement to his little world lyricism. It is a voice that is quite singular but does contain certain elements of others. Brian Miller's voice reminds me of a couple of artists. For instance the timbre and clarity of his voice at times reminiscent of John K Samson from the Weakerthans. At other times his voice is evocative of Mark Everett of Eels.

What one word best describes Call?

Beguiled

For the uninitiated, what’s the best way to listen to this album?

Nothing beats walking with this record. It really does work as the perfect soundtrack for the present season too. Reminding us to soak the allure of it all in. A beautiful record for beautiful times. Be forewarned though you might just want to hit repeat and do the whole walk over again.

“With money in your pocket, you are wise, and you are handsome, and you sing well too”

Handsome Dan and His Gallimaufry Set to Release Their New EP

Over the past year you'd be hard-pressed to find a band as affecting, and as unassuming as London Ontario’s own Handsome Dan and His Gallimaufry. The band, comprised of a handful of capable local musicians (Kevin Brasier, Andrew James, Daniel Mancini, Sam Shelstad, Jake Szuminski, Blair Whatmore) have quietly worked their way into our musical hearts with their distinctive blend of rootsy stylings and earnest lyricism. Their performances always joyous sing-along affairs punctuated with playful shout outs and always, without fail, wall to wall smiles. Alas, the Forest City’s best kept musical secret might not be a secret much longer. To borrow a phrase, “you just can’t keep a good band down”. And this is definitely a band on the way up.

Their latest release Provincial Parks and Breaking Hearts (Oh! Records), an EP due out this Friday (July 30th) may only be six songs long but is bound to expand the horizons of this talented sextet. This is a recording that wears its influences on its vintage t-shirt sleeve and yet manages to blaze plenty of new trails as well. Fresh, confident and bursting at the seams this is music that commands your attentions from the start and by the time the first single “Loyal She Began” comes to an end you’re sold. Those bristling guitars and heartbreaking harmonies the perfect soundtrack for the cool August nights nipping around the corner.

It would seem that Provincial Parks and Breaking Hearts is a record that manages to both impress from the get go and yet continues to reveal hidden charms well into frequent plays. Whether it be a subtle organ flourish, a splash of feedback or an airy percussive element; With every listen a new layer is revealed. The production values on this one are top-notch and really take the songs to another level. The result being a record that feels immediate and personal. "Together we Ain’t" ably underscores these palpable qualities. Daniel Mancini’s eloquently burnished delivery and lyrical style reminiscent of Will Oldham. The stalwart Gallimaufry delivering stellar Wilco or even the Band style accompaniment on every track.

Sure I wish it was longer but perhaps that is just being selfish. Considering what lies around the corner for these guys Provincial Parks and Breaking Hearts is a brilliant statement that leaves us wanting more. If ever there was a recording that begged for vinyl release it would be this one. One look at the cover art (slightly reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s Basement Tapes) will pull you in exactly the same way the music does. Heartening stuff.   The place in that photo looks kinda familiar.  They got it right this time and it’s thrilling as hell.

PPPPP

Handsome Dan and His Gallimaufry will be releasing the new brand new disc on Friday July 30th at Call the Office. $7 Plan to attend. The Woody Allens and Olenka and the Autumn Lovers are also on the bill.  The CD will be available at the show.  I'll update when other options are available.

Handsome Dan and His Gallimaufry are:

Kevin Braiser | Organ/Piano
Andrew James | Drums
Daniel Mancini | Guitar/Vocals
Sam Shelstad | Guitar
Jake Szuminksi | Bass
Blair Whatmore | Guitar/ Lap Steel

Sharon Van Etten’s Epic Future

Sharon Van Etten’s Because I Was in Love continues to astound me every time I listen to it. Revealing it's myriad layers and little secrets a little more every time. This is a record I will discover for years on end. Thrilling and beautiful... But aren’t those always the best kind?  For those unfamiliar with that recording she is also the singer responsible for so many of those haunting vocals on the Antlers’ masterpiece Hospice.

Good news then, the hugely talented Brooklynite, will be putting out her second record, a seven-song collection called Epic, on October 5th through Ba Da Bing. (Home of Beirut, Damon Naomi, Comets on Fire and the U.S. home of Hawksley Workman.) The new record was recorded in Philadelphia at the Miner Street Studios and features vocal assists by Meg Baird (Espers), Cat Martino and Jessica Larrabee (She Keeps Bees). A seven-inch is also due this summer on Polyvinyl. (Full tracklisting below.)

Additionally, she contributes “I Couldn’t Save You” to the soundtrack for the forthcoming Rick Alverson DVD, The Builder, due later this month on Jagjaguwar. Watch the trailer for the film here.

If you’re reading this LOLA organizers, you need to bring this woman to London in the Fall for LOLA 2010!

Menomena Back with Mines This Summer

Portland, OR trio Menomena (Justin Harris, Brent Knopf, and Danny Seim) will return this summer with its much anticipated fourth studio album. The album, entitled Mines will be released on July 27th via Barsuk (North America) and City Slang (worldwide). Mines (tracklisting below) is the follow-up to their very excellent Friend and Foe released in 2007.

Certainly no strangers to the best cover art, the band’s first album featured unusual packaging in the form of a flipbook depicting the band members performing. Menomena promises more artistic goodness with their latest effort as well. The cover of Mines depicts a statue in a forest, and while it looks fairly normal on your average computer screen, will actually be included as a stereogram optical illusion.

Mines:

01. Queen Black Acid
02. Taos
03. Killemall
04. Dirty Cartoons
05. Tithe
06. Bote
07. Lunchmeat
08. Oh Pretty Boy, You're Such a Big Boy
09. Five Little Rooms
10. Sleeping Beauty
11. Intil

Lead single “Five Little Rooms” can be downloaded for free from the band's official site in exchange for an email address (details below).

Forest City Lovers Returning with Carriage

Toronto indie quintet Forest City Lovers have announced their third album, Carriage, will be released on June 29th through Out of this Spark Records. This is the folk-popsters’ follow-up to their exquisite 2008 release, Haunting Moon Sinking.

From the band’s website:
This year was a struggle and a transition period for everyone involved in the project. Good times were had, bad times were had, new friends were made and our proverbial hands just clasped tighter on all our hard work. Everything finally cultivated into Carriage: an eleven song journey that depicts growing young, growing old, displacement and the fantastical feeling of realising you’re still quite alive.
You can hear a preview of one of their new tracks, “Light You Up” currently streaming here.

No word yet on a full fledged Canadian tour as of yet but the band will be heading overseas for several shows in May; check out the show details here.

Local fans, should note that the band is playing one show in Toronto on June 11th, when they will play a LEAF fundraiser at Artscape Wychwood Barns. As well, head Forest City Lover Kat Burns will be playing a solo show tonight (May 5th) at the legendary Horseshoe in Toronto.

You’re (Not) Gonna Miss Me

It’s been nearly a decade and a half since any new, original material from psych-rock legend Roky Erickson was on the shelves. Word today that the legendary 13th Floor Elevators frontman is readying a brand new record called True Love Cast Out All Evil. Fellow Austin, Texas rockers Okkervil River back Erickson on the whole album and Okkervil head honcho Will Sheff produces. (Erickson played previously with Okkervil River at SXSW in 2008 and 2009.)

Talking about the record in a press release, Sheff said, "When we started out, I was given sixty unreleased songs to choose from. There were songs written during business setbacks including the Elevators' painful breakup, songs written by Roky while he was incarcerated at Rusk, and a great deal of songs that reminded me of the sense of optimism and romanticism that I think sustained Roky through his worst years and ultimately reunited him, a few years ago, with his son Jegar and his first wife Dana."

Though his music has appeared in several anthologies over the last two decades, Erickson has not released new material since 1995's All That May Do My Rhyme, and it is half a century since the Texas songwriter's most celebrated work, with psychedelic rockers 13th Floor Elevators. Erickson was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1968, leading to time in hospital, while minor brushes with the law and resulted in further hospitalisation. In 2005 the singer was profiled in a documentary, You're Gonna Miss Me, which helped a healthier Erickson to launch a small comeback, touring the US and parts of Europe. The new album features songs written by Erickson throughout his life, as well as "found-sound and archival recordings culled from Erickson's home videos and recordings made in the Rusk State Hospital.

True Love Cast Out All Evil, is out April 20th via Anti-.

Wilco (The Update)

As previously reported Wilco (the hardest working band in show business) will be touring extensively in early 2010. New details have now emerged that make this a must-see. Chicago’s finest will hopefully be introducing some new material into their sets as it has been heavily rumoured that they will be recording this month. If that weren’t enough Jeff Tweedy has been also been tapped to produce an album for fellow Chicagoan Mavis Staples.

Do these guys ever take a break? Be sure to watch for them on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on January 28th.

Lastly, please note this very, very good news! The amazing Califone (also from Chicago) will travel northward this February, in support of Wilco on the Trans-Canada part of their tour.

“Success has always been the worst of liars”

Friedrich Nietzsche never heard the music of this band but I remember the first time I heard the music of Liars. A preview track on Wire Magazine’s always fantastic Wiretapper Compilation opened a breathtaking, albeit noisy new world to me. As impressed as I was with this amazing debut, their next record, Drums Not Dead blew my mind. I wasn’t the only one and it provided considerable proof this band was a force to reckon with. Not surprising then, there has been considerable excitement building for the New York band’s forthcoming Sisterworld release. Scheduled for release in early 2010, the inscrutable trio have released three short videos (each accompanied by seemingly teaser snippets from the album.) Today the teasing ends and a more substantial offering is being made via the same website in the form of an free MP3, titled “Scissor.”

“Scissor” is set to be the first song on the new album, and if it is any indication, the band is set to explore some new and interesting musical territory. Could the sturm and drang be behind them? Replaced instead with ambience and fragility… I didn’ think so either. As always with Liars one must expect the unexpected. Who know what 'lies' in store for us in the coming months.

But for now, enjoy this free download.

Ted Leo Gets Brutal

Matador Records announced in September that Brooklyn rocker Ted Leo and his band the Pharmacists had signed to the label and a new release would be forthcoming. News today, that the new record from Leo will be released early in the new year. The LP is titled The Brutalist Bricks and will be out on March 9th. It was recorded in Brooklyn's Seaside Lounge, and is the band's first full length release since 2007's Living with the Living ,and their sixth overall.

From the Matador Website:
‘Bricks’ could be the most confident, kinetic and varied work in Ted’s canon, and considering his body of work until now, that’s no easy claim to make.”
You can hear and download a sampling of the record now here, in the form of lead single "Even Heroes Have to Die".  If you’re a fan of Leo you won’t be disappointed with this one.

The Winter of Mixed Drinks On the Way

As if the first part of the 2010 new release calendar wasn’t all ready filled with high profile new music releases, Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit has returned, following 2008’s superb The Midnight Organ Fight, with plans to release its third full length record. Titled The Winter of Mixed Drinks early previews are indicating another knockout effort from these talented Scots.
From the Guardian Weekly Podcast

We’ve broadened our horizons sonically and it feels like a natural move forward,” explains lead singer Scott Hutchison. “Most importantly, it’s better than the last one. That’s all I wanted, really.” Again, as if that was even possible!”
The Winter of Mixed Drinks was produced by Peter Katis, at Tarquin Studios in Connecticut, and engineered by Stuart Hamilton at Castlesound Studios in Scotland. It also features a guest appearance from labelmate Hauschka, who provided the album’s string arrangements. The album is scheduled for release on March 1st in the U.K. (via FatCat Records).  A North American release date is still forthcoming. Until then, have a look (and listen) to the first single, “Swim Until You Can’t See Land”.

Zooey Neews

This past summer She & Him’s M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel were busy working on the follow up to their terrific album Volume One, and in a recent interview with MTV, Deschanel has revealed that the album is in the completed and set for release in 2010.

“I have a new She & Him record coming out in the spring. It’s official. It’s done and being released in the spring. And we’re going to go on tour.”
Good music news to warm the heart a little on a cold and wet November night.
