Caribou Remixes Four Tet

Domino Records will release the Four Tet Angel Echoes Remix 12” on August 3, 2010 in North America (July 19, 2010 in the UK). Angel Echoes is the third single from Four Tet’s universally acclaimed album There Is Love In You. The A side on this remix 12” features a deep, club ready remix by Caribou, currently on tour promoting his new album Swim. (You can download that one for free via the handy widget below.) The flip side contains a gorgeous piano-infused remix by Domino Record’s labelmate Jon Hopkins. The digital bundle will include all the ‘There Is Love In You’ remixes to date.

A long-list nominee for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize, Timber Timbre was heralded by the Canadian press since its release this summer on Arts & Crafts. Playing CMJ last week, Time Out New York wrote that Timber Timbre was "the standout act" describing their set as "powerfully dark, even eerie folk tracks (which) managed to keep the crowd positively awed.” The Village Voice called them a "uniquely creepy beauty".

Timber Timbre recently wrapped up a month-long North American tour and will return to the road this week including a performance on the always great Morning Becomes Eclectic on KCRW.

With the Murmur reissue still holding fort in my cd player and the Reckoning reissue just around the corner the appearance of this most excellent tribute made my morning a whole lot brighter. Such a pivotal recording in my canon of important releases, R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People is not your typical troubled teenager. It remains a wonder to me and this tribute a more than worthy musical companion. From the great folks at Stereogum I highly recommend the full download here.

The following is an excerpt from an essay written for Stereogum by Matthew Perpetua, founder of Fluxblog and more recently Pop Songs 07, for which the goal is to "write about every R.E.M. song, eventually." Matthew was invited to put R.E.M.'s seminal '92 LP in perspective as the Drive XV tribute was finalized.

Sweetness Followed: 15 Years After Automatic

Even though we know that Automatic For The People came out fifteen years ago, and we can clearly recall purchasing the neon yellow cassette back in the fall of 1992, it's increasingly difficult to hear the album without imagining that its songs have somehow always existed in the world. Unlike most other celebrated, canonized records from the early '90s, R.E.M.'s eighth album stands separate from the prevailing cultural trends of the era. Whereas most other rock bands at the time either embraced the aggressive, self-destructive angst of grunge or the brainy, aloof irony of indie rock, the Athens quartet presented something far more singular and timeless in the form of a tightly composed, occasionally baroque song cycle obsessed with mortality and the passage of time.

This is not to say that Automatic For The People is a relentless downer. Despite its morbid themes, Automatic isn’t so much a record about death as it is a work of art that acknowledges the fleeting nature of life, and so many of its songs, most notably the hits "Man on the Moon" and "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite," revel in the simple joy of being alive. On the opposite extreme, "Drive," "Monty Got A Raw Deal," and "Sweetness Follows" are stark and somber pieces that express the hollowness of grief and the subtle drag of existential dread with stunning accuracy and clarity. The rest of the songs fall someplace in between -- the sentimental reminiscence of "Nightswimming"; the grim depiction of a bitter break-up in "Star Me Kitten"; the romantic wanderlust of "Find The River" -- and taken as a whole, the record comes across like a panoramic view of life.Needless to say, Automatic For The People has had a profound impact on its audience, particularly those who first heard the record at a young and impressionable age.

Your Weekly Download Lowdown

As Canadian readers will note, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and along with those typical Autumns riches (screw you Dow Jones) come a couple of downloads to enjoy whilst partaking in the inevitable turkey dinner. Proper dinner music is a must!

The first is from the always prolific Bradford (Deerhunter, Atlas Sound) Cox whose Coffin Trick is short sharp slice of slightly warped Kinks like pop. Appropriate title with Halloween at the end of the month. On a related note, his sublime cover of Bjork’s Headphones is still available at Stereogum.

As you’re sitting in the big room after the main course, a real treat from Daytrotter this week. Aimee Mann has recorded a session of songs all from her excellent 2008 cd, @#%&*! Smilers. Every time I listen to that disc I love it a little more. Which reminds me… It’s time for my annual viewing of Magnolia- A movie whose centrepiece is the extraordinarily moving music of Ms. Aimee Mann. If you haven’t seen yet it pack the kleenex and watch out for the frogs.

Weary Downloaders Rejoice and Link

I have to admit I was intrigued by the Felice Brothers when they described their sound as how “a barn smells” on their MySpace page. You can’t beat a personal endorsement like that now can you? True Americana at its very root, band members Simone Felice, Ian Felice, James Felice, and Christmas have recorded a wonderful Daytrotter session that you need to download. The perfect soundtrack for lounging on your dusty porch this weekend, cold drink in hand, savouring the last remnants of summer. Think Music From Big Pink updated for the 21st century.

And just as the sun sinks on the horizon you can relish the countrified musings of the Pieta Brown session also on Daytrotter. Ethereal and timeless, these songs are all keepers. The minimal arrangements reveal Pieta’s voice to be a sublime treasure. My highlight? “In My Mind, I Was Talkin' To Loretta”, from her latest album Remember the Sun. Superb.

Lastly two new downloads this week previewing Toronto violin virtuoso, Owen Pallett’s (aka Final Fantasy) two new ep’s coming soon. The first (from Stereogum) a collaboration with Beirut recorded in Quebec last year. The second (from Zoilus) is a preview of a set of covers of songs by Toronto musician Alex Lukashevsky. If you have never heard the music of Owen Pallett before this would be a terrific place to start. For the initiated, something to tide you over until his Heartland project is released.
